Built In 20 Years, Europe's Telecoms Empire Crumbles

Europe's 20-year telecoms competition initiative has benefited millions of consumers and businesses through increased choice and quality of service. However, this achievement is threatened by regulatory, competitive and technological pressures and 2014 marks the beginning of a new transformative phase. Leading the way are over-the-top (OTT) services such as WhatsApp and Netflix. Traditional infrastructure-led operators are particularly exposed and, as a recent spate of mergers indicates, the next decade will see a thinning-out of a crowded sector.
