Frontier Mining – Global Outlook
We expect emerging markets to be the predominant driver of global mine production increases over the coming years as investors increasingly look at frontier destinations for new projects. However, the frenzy of frontier mining project announcements of recent years has cooled in recent months and we do not expect a return to the giddy levels of investment witnessed in 2010-2011. Our forecast for industrial commodity prices to head broadly lower over the coming years on the back of a slowing Chinese economy is central to this expectation. Indeed, lower output prices will encourage more conservative investment strategies across the industry. This trend is already evidenced in the rhetoric employed by major mining firms in 2013.
