News: Japanese automaker Yamaha is rumoured to be developing a twin cylinder engine for its future vehicles, Indian Car Bikes reports. No exact specifications have been revealed, but the parallel twin cylinder engine is believed to be a 500cc unit and a potential rival to the Honda CBR500. The rumours stem from a business briefing by Yamaha in Tokyo, which exhibited three images of future engines, including the parallel engine. Experts say an engine of that size could be used to power Sports, Dual Purpose and Street motorcycles.
BMI View: The expected contraction in Japanese auto sales has continued into March, as sales for the month fell 11.3% y-o-y, taking the total for the first three months of the year, to 1,528,009 units, down 9.4% y-o-y. We forecast an 11% decline for 2013, to 4.8mn units, based on the incentivised growth of 2012, which we believe will be difficult to repeat.
