News: UK-based Vodafone was the only local mobile phone operator that failed to reach the 90% 3G coverage target by the deadline of June 30, reports Total Telecoms. The UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) told Vodafone to roll-out services to 80% of the UK population by mid-2013 when licences were awarded in 2000. However, this figure was increased to 90% by the government in 2010. Vodafone has now agreed to reach the target by end-2013, rolling-out 3G to more mobile masts than it had originally estimated as being necessary. Ofcom said it will review Vodafone's implementation of the amended plans and will assess Vodafone's compliance in January 2014, at which point it will decide whether or not to take further action if the obligations have not been met.
