News: Congolese telecoms operator Vodacom Congo has announced that it has initiated installation of 3G equipment in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reports La Prosperite. The operator has deployed 50 base stations in Kinshasa and 20 in Lubumbashi, with further plans of installing 350 3G sites before end-2012.
BMI View: The move will help cater to the growing demand for advanced mobile services in the Democratic Republic of Congo. BMI estimates that there will be 17.7mn mobile subscribers in 2012 and expects the total to rise 48.36% by 2016 to 26.28mn. During this period penetration will rise from 25.5% to 34.1%.
