Vedanta To Await Local Consent For Bauxite Mining In Odisha

News: London-listed Vedanta Resources has decided not to mine bauxite at the Niyamgiri hills of Odisha, India until it gains the consent of the local communities opposed to its plan. The company's bauxite mining plans at Niyamgiri had been rejected by the Indian environment ministry after the Dongria Kondh tribe claimed that the concerned region was sacred to them and was home to their deity Niyam Raja. Residents of all the 12 local villages reportedly voted unanimously against mining in the region. Following its decision to wait for the local consent, Vedanta will have to search for another source of raw material for its Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha.
