Varian Medical Systems has integrated its Eclipse treatment planning system with Elekta's radiotherapy linear accelerators to deliver volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatments at Kantonsspital St Gallen in Switzerland. An 83-year-old patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma became the first patient in the world to be treated using this combination of software and equipment.
VMAT treatments enable the delivery of precise image-guided intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) faster than conventional IMRT. With volumetric arc treatments, the beam quickly delivers the dose while continuously rotating around the patient. Studies show that faster treatments allow for greater precision, since there is less chance of patient or tumour movement during treatment delivery.
