News: Thai mobile operator TOT launched a 3G service over the 2.1GHz band in Chiang Mai. This initiative is a part of the first phase of its nationwide 3G network roll-out. TOT plans to set up 5,320 3G sites across Thailand, with a total of 4,015 sites already activated under the first phase of the 3G network roll-out. The first phase is scheduled to be concluded in May. TOT is also set to offer 3G wholesale services to five partners: Samart, Loxley, IEC, 365 Communication and M Consultant.
BMI View: This launch will enable TOT to cater to the rising demand for 3G services in Thailand. BMI estimates there will be 19.6mn 3G/4G subscribers in 2013 and expects the total to rise 85.8% by 2017 to 36.4mn. During this period 3G/4G penetration will rise from 22.4% to 39.1%.
