Suzuki Shuts Gijon Production Facility

News: Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor has closed its production facility in Gijon, Spain. The move will result in the loss of 200 jobs. The facility used to manufacture GZ 125, Maurader 250, Burgman 125, Burgman 200, UX 125, 150 Sixteen, DR 125 SM, GS500 and GS500F machines. Meanwhile, the automaker is already closing 98 dealerships in the US with extremely poor efficiency. Suzuki Spain produced the last motorcycle on March 27, with the operations scheduled to close down at end-March.

BMI View: Japan-based automobile company Suzuki Motor announced said its motorcycle facility in Gijon, Spain, will shut down in March 2013 after which Suzuki Motor Spain will operate just as an importer and distributor for Suzuki motorcycles in the region. Over the remainder of our 2017 forecast period, we expect to see an ongoing decline in vehicle production levels in Spain, although we have reason to be somewhat less bearish over this period than our previous outlook. In 2017, we forecast a 5.2% decline in total vehicle production, a considerably less bearish outlook than for 2012.
