News: French automobile logistics company STVA has been awarded a concession for a period of two years to operate a second ro-ro terminal for vehicles at the Port of Tanger Med in Morocco. The terminal is scheduled to start operations in January 2013 and will cater to trade vehicles from all manufacturers and ship owners. The ro-ro terminal spreads over an area of six hectares and has a capacity to store 3,000 vehicles. The terminal has been designed to simultaneously handle up to three ships. The logistics company is aiming to annually handle nearly 400,000 vehicles.
BMI View: Tanger Med is located about 40 km from the city of Tangier. It began operations in 2007 and is the biggest port on the Mediterranean and the largest in North Africa. The port complex currently has two terminals, the first operated by APMT, and Terminal 2 by Eurogate-Contship Tanger, a consortium including MSC and CMA CGM. BMI expects Tanger Med to expand into a major Mediterranean trade hub.
