NTC To Release TOR For 3G Frequencies Auction

News: The Philippines' National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is set to release the terms of reference (TOR) for the auction of 3G frequencies, which were recently surrendered by Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprises, in early December. Under the primary bidding qualification criteria, an interested bidder for the 10MHz frequency spectrum must hold a congressional telecoms franchise with the financial ability to carry out a capital-intensive telecoms service offering.

BMI View: The auction of 3G frequencies will enable provision of 3G service in the Philippines. BMI estimates that there will be 9.9mn 3G subscribers in 2012 and expects the total to rise 63.9% by 2016 to 16.2mn. During this period the 3G market as a percentage of the entire mobile market will rise from 9.7% to 14.2%.
