News: Mukul Sangma, the chief minister of the Indian state of Meghalaya, laid the foundation stone for a railway station at Mendipathar in Garo Hills region on September 8 2012. The station, which is the first in the state, will involve an estimated investment of INR860mn (US$16.44mn). It is likely to be completed by 2013 and is to lie along the Dudhnoi-Mendipathar new broad-gauge railway line project, which is expected to create opportunities for the people and the state, according to Sangma. Meanwhile, another railway line connecting North Bengal with Garo Hills region through the Indian state of Assam is also in the pipeline. The development of the railway station in the state comes despite opposition from several quarters, owing to the fear of influx of outsiders.
