News In Brief - Aecon Unit Secures Contract For Biomass Conversion Project

News: The industrial division of Aecon Group has been awarded a US$170mn contract by Ontario Power Generation to design and build the Atikokan Generating Station biomass conversion project in Canada. The company will add fuel handling and storage systems in order to modify the existing facility. This will allow the plant to handle sustainable biomass materials in order to produce renewable power. The plant will become one of the largest renewable power biomass facilities in North America and, once operational in 2014, will have a power generation capacity of more than 200MW.

BMI View: We forecast that Canada's energy and utilities infrastructure industry will post solid growth over the medium term (2012-2016), with annual average growth of 4.2% anticipated. The data illustrates that power plants and transmission grids infrastructure forms the vast majority of the total sector's value, with a share of 59.1% forecast for 2012. This is reflected in our key projects database, with power plants accounting for 42% of total projects in the infrastructure sector.
