New Vehicle Sales Decline 9.2% In May

News: South Africa registered a 9.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) decline in new vehicle sales to 49,465 units in May, according to statistics released by the Department of Trade and Industry. Sales of medium trucks reached 830 units in the reported period, representing a fall of 14.4%. Exports from South Africa decreased by 40.5% y-o-y to 15,613 units in May. In the reported period, domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and minibuses fell by 5.1% to 13,866 units. Sales of heavy trucks and buses also declined by 4.3% to 1,785 units in May. The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa attributed the decline due to the temporary lack of exports by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, as the company is engaged in the new C-Class production.
