Legislature Approves YPF-Chevron Shale Deal Amid Protests

News: The Argentine Patagonian province of Neuquén legislature granted approval on August 28 to a deal between state-owned petroleum company YPF and US-based energy firm Chevron to exploit the Vaca Muerta shale gas reserves. The approval came amid violent protests outside the provincial parliament. Around 5,000 opponents of the proposed deal, including federal lawmakers and indigenous Mapuches, clashed with police throughout the duration of the vote. However, the deal was finally approved by a comfortable majority, with 25 lawmakers in favour, two abstentions and eight absentees.
