Lactalis Acquires Slovenian Dairy Firm

France-based dairy company Lactalis has reached an agreement to acquire a controlling 50.3% stake in Slovenian dairy firm Ljubljanske Miekarne . The Slovenian company is active across the dairy industry, and the move represents the latest indication of the consolidation that has taken place across Europe's dairy sector over the past few years, with Lactalis among the most active participants .

Lactalis , o ne of the world's largest dairy companies and France's second largest food company behind Danone , has played an important part in the consolidation of the European dairy industry, with acquisitions in France, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Switzerland and the UK. According to Lactalis, Ljubljanske Miekarne is Slovenia's largest dairy company with annual sales believed to be in excess of EUR150mn. Among the core dairy categories we forecast, processed liquid milk production in Slovenia is expected to grow particularly strongly over our forecast period to 2017 ( see first chart ) .
