Government To Build New Hospitals And Clinics For NHI
News: The South African government intends to build 43 new hospitals in the next five years and a minimum of 213 clinics in 11 pilot districts for National Health Insurance (NHI), according to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. The majority of health infrastructure projects in the country are managed by the provinces, but the cabinet and treasury have granted approval to the national health department to manage this project, Motsoaledi said. This will allow the minister to swiftly take control should anything go awry with the project. Motsoaledi has even asked the treasury and cabinet to grant him 'special permission' to have responsibility for the NHI pilot districts at a national level. The new clinics and hospitals will be built in the pilot districts and handed over with a detailed maintenance plan to the provinces when they are complete.
