Government Starts Nuclear Power Feasibility, Environmental Study
News: The government of Bangladesh has started the feasibility and environmental as well as safety studies for the Rooppur nuclear power plant, which is believed to be the first nuclear plant in the country, reports AFP. The opening phase of work is expected to take around two years to complete. In 2011, the government contracted Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom to construct the plant. The power plant would be equipped with two 1,000MW reactors worth US$4bn, to be supplied by Russia. Meanwhile, the government has also secured soft loans from Russia to finance 90% of the project. Additionally, the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2007 granted approval for the construction of the nuclear plant.
