News: Swiss m ining company Glencore Xstrata has released the environmental reports for its Zandbaken coal development project in South Africa ' s Mpumalanga province to the public, Mining Weekly reports. South African consultants Digby Wells Environmental stated that t he local community would now have until October 7 2013 to raise any concerns about the development of the project.
BMI View: We expect South Africa's coal production to experience strong growth, reversing stagnant output growth over the past five years. This will have important implications for the country's power sector and help make Southern Africa a global coal export hub. Overall, we expect output to grow at an average rate of 2.4%, pushing production to 284mnt (mn tonnes) in 2017, from 253mnt in 2012.The downside risk to our forecast lies in ongoing labour unrest in the mining sector which threatens to destabilize the business environment, deterring future investment.
