The first patient has been treated with Accuray's TomoHDA system, at Centre Oscar Lambret in Lille, France. Building upon ITS TomoTherapy Hi-Art and TomoHD technologies, TomoHDA is a fully-integrated radiotherapy system designed to treat the full spectrum of cancer patients. Performance enhancements, improved dose distributions and faster treatments are among the new features of the system.
TomoTherapy systems, including TomoHDA, are equipped with VoLO technology, offering real-time efficiency for treatment planning and dose calculation. VoLO relies on high-end graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware and software that use the GPU's parallel processing abilities to perform dose calculation and optimisation in a minutes.
The TomoHDA system is also equipped with the TomoEDGE dynamic jaws technology, offering fast image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy treatments. The technology allows for sharper dose sculpting and reduces treatment time by approximately half, which will enable clinics to treat more patients per day. Additionally, through the use of 3D daily imaging of the tumour site throughout a patient's course of radiotherapy, physicians often use the information to make important changes to treatment plans ensuring optimal delivery of radiation to only the tumour site, sparing surrounding critical structures and healthy tissue.
