Farmers Strike As Government Fails To Implement Promised Measures

News: Colombian farmers are protesting against the government for failing to enact reforms promised during a strike in August 2013. The government had vowed to roll out measures to lower debt and control prices of fertilisers. The government has claimed that it is in the process of implementing the reforms; however, some can be introduced only over the long term. The government has reinforced security in the main coffee, rice and potato producing areas. Defence Minister Juan Carlos Pinzón has accused the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia rebel group of encouraging the protest in order to destabilise the government before the May 25 presidential elections (Reuters).
