News: Excessive consumption of alcohol and obesity cause the most premature deaths among men and women in Thailand. The two indicators have accounted for thousands of premature deaths in the country in the past few years, said Veerasak Jongsuwiwatwong, a director at the Institute of Research and Development for Health of Southern Thailand. The study, which is conducted once in five years by a team of researchers from the International Health Policy Programme Thailand, aims to develop indicators to establish the disease and health burden of the population. According to the latest study, which started in 2009, of the total 430,583 deaths, about 50,000 people died because of chronic diseases caused by drinking too much alcohol and smoking.
