The Health Department of the People's Liberation Army in China, an organisation that manages military hospitals, has awarded a contract to Elekta for the purchase of cancer management systems.
As part of the agreement, Elekta will deliver a range of clinical systems, including Leksell Gamma Knife as well as linear accelerators and associated software. The total value of the contract amounts to US$35 million, making it Elekta's largest deal ever in China. The order will be booked when all conditions in the tender have been finalised.
The Leksell Gamma Knife is fully automated and has the ability to treat patients with multiple brain metastases in much shorter times compared with other technologies. The surgery is used to manage numerous neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumours such as metastatic cancer, as well as vascular malformations and certain functional disorders. Patients benefit from fast, painless treatment, often conducted in an out-patient surgical setting without the need for general anaesthesia or, in some cases, convalescence.
