Deutsche Bahn Loses EU Raid Appeals
News : Germain rail operator Deutsche Bahn has failed in its bid to overturn the EU ' s decision to order antitrust raids at the company ' s offices, according to Bloomberg. The state-operated railway characterised the raids as a fishing expedi tion, but the EU General Court in Lu xembourg ruled that regulators were in compliance with EU rules. The raids were ordered in an effort to investigate the potential competition issues raised by the strategic use of infrastructure by other companies in the Deutsche Bahn group.
BMI View: The German rail freight sector will enjoy something of a switch in fortunes in 2013, after the disappointing 1.90% estimated year-on-year growth in 2012. 2013's tonnage throughput is set to come in at 2.46% to 396.97mn tonnes, up from 2012's 387.44mn tonnes. Rail freight growth is set to remain steady, if uninspiring, over the forecast period, with volumes forecast to increase by 2.78%. If realised, this would see the freight mode handle 444.34mn tonnes in 2017, down on our forecast from last year as global headwinds affect the sector.
