Daimler To Expand Van Assembly Plant

News: Germany's Daimler Vans Manufacturing will invest US$4.6mn in expanding its Charleston County van assembly plant in the US. The move is expected to generate at least 60 new jobs, and the expansion is expected to be completed by 2018. The investment is aimed at renovating the building and changing the current assembly line. The company assembles Sprinters for the US market under the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brands.

BMI View: Following Ford Motor 's US$1.1bn investment in its Kansas City plant, which includes adding the Transit range of vans to its line-up, and the news that General Motors Company (GM) will sell rebadged Nissan NV200s as Chevrolet vans from 2014, it is clear that the US commercial van market is receiving more attention. Sales growth for every model in the segment in 2012 is evidence of growing demand, while an influx of new models planned for the next couple of years should help to revive the segment.
