CPA Workers To Join Strike

News: Workers at the Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) were scheduled to strike for 24 hours on February 27 against a proposed plan to privatise the authority. A vote on the privatisation plan was scheduled on February 26. The workers were joining people from other semi-government organisations such as Electricity Authority and telecoms authority to protest the plan. The government plans to privatise the CPA in 27 months, so this leaves workers with no alternative but to strike, said head of port workers at PEO union, Glafcos Constantinou. The strike has already affected shipping companies and import-export companies heavily. Also, shipping companies could divert trade routes to some other routes, primarily through Israel, said Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry General Secretary Marios Tsiakkis and Cyprus Shipping Association General Manager Lefteris Kouzapas (Cyprus Mail).
