Court Orders Immediate Deactivation Of Unregistered SIM Cards

News: On April 1, Bangladesh's high court ordered the immediate deactivation of all unregistered mobile SIM cards, following a petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer JR Khan Robin. The court has urged the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the telecoms secretary, the home secretary and the CEOs of Bangladeshi mobile operators to implement the order. The petition reportedly claims that there are more than 7mn unregistered active SIM cards in the market of around 110mn mobile subscribers, regardless of law which prohibits the sale of unregistered SIMs. The petition states that mobile top-up vendors across the country continue to sell unregistered SIMs, leading to loss of state revenue and the anonymous usage of SIMs for unlawful activities.
