News: Romanian mobile operator Cosmote commercially rolled out its LTE network in the country. The LTE network is initially accessible in Bucharest (the Northern area) and Otopeni, Ploiesti, Cluj, Lasi and in the tourist areas of Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal. The service can be operated on USB modems or tablets, but not on smartphones. Customers are required to pay EUR5 (US$6.5) on a monthly basis, along with the existing tariffs to access the 4G service.
BMI View: The launch will enable Cosmote to offer advanced mobile broadband services in Romania. BMI estimates there will be 9.3mn 3G/4G subscribers in 2013 and expects the total to rise 21.9% by 2017 to 11.3mn. During this period the 3G/4G mobile penetration will rise from 33.9% to 40.7%.
