Ooredoo announced in late March that it has reached an agreement with Level 3 Communications to launch a content delivery network (CDN) node in Doha, which will allow the telecoms operator to offer enhanced wholesale business services. The CDN will increase the speed of delivery of content, particularly those bandwidth-intensive ones and originating from overseas, which chimes with the growing popularity of services such as video conferencing among businesses.

Ooredoo sees Level 3's CDN as an important step in its international connectivity strategy to make Qatar one of the best-connected countries in the world - Level 3 is providing the operator with increased IP connectivity at multiple points of presence across Europe.
Ooredoo is increasingly stepping up its efforts to offer more sophisticated services to its enterprise customers, which is a response to the growing demand. Businesses are looking to better leverage on technological advancements to reduce cost and improve efficiencies. For example, cloud solutions could be used in industries such as healthcare, logistics and manufacturing.
Earlier in January 2013, the operator partnered with Akamai to offer cloud-based services in Qatar. Under the partnership, Ooredoo use s Akamai's Intelligent Platform to provide cloud solutions such as video, web-acceleration and mobile applications to its clients in the media, banking and e-commerce markets. Akamai's technology enable s Ooredoo to give faster access to multimedia content on mobile devices and online to its corporate clients. The operator's virtual computing platform offers cost-effective IT infrastructure, primarily to small- and medium-sized enterprises.
The move towards deploying the necessary infrastructure for bandwidth-intensive services in the region is not isolated to Ooredoo. In early March, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) announced that it will host a new Level 3 CDN node within its newly opened SmartHub facility. Level 3's global CDN provid es the UAE incumbent with network reach, performance and scalability for its customers in multiple markets. The agreement expands Etisalat's portfolio of services, leveraging the CDN for video and other offerings. CDN solutions can help minimise the need for sending local traffic outside the network, raising connectivity times and reducing routing costs for end-users.
Since launching wholesale services in 2010, Ooredoo reported that IT and broadband requirements in Qatar have risen by more than 40%, resulting in the operator building landing stations to connect to the Tata Global Network and Gulf Bridge International submarine cable systems. The advantages of deploying CDN are not limited to the enterprise market as consumer data demand is also on a rapid surge. Overall, we believe that the collaboration with Level 3 fits nicely with Ooredoo's strategy of scaling the profitable mobile data and focusing on the enterprise (datacentres and B2B operations) as well as mobile and broadband segments.
