News: German automotive component supplier Continental has opened a new research and development (R&D) centre in the Romanian city of Timisoara. Continental has invested EUR20mn (US$25.5mn) in the centre, which can accommodate more than 2,000 workers. The R&D centre is in the same location as Continental's production facility, allowing for faster and more efficient processes.
BMI View: The Romanian auto industry could see an influx of investments in the near future, thanks to plans by as many as 12 parts makers to build production facilities in the country, according to Constantin Stroe, chairman of the Association of Automotive Manufacturers of Romania. BMI believes Romania's attractiveness lies in its low-cost production and the entry of a large number of carmakers in the country over the last few years, which has helped bring investments from both Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers.
