Australia Enhances Emergency Text Message Service

News: Australia's Victorian Police and Emergency Service Minister, Kim Wells, along with Justice Minister Michael Keenan launched an enhancement to the emergency alert system in Melbourne, reports ZDNet. The enhancement allows a text message to be sent to mobile phones that are within the vicinity of an emergency, which could previously only be sent to a mobile phone's registered service address. Previously, Telstra was the only network to be able to send emergency text alerts, but Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia can send them too. This means the entire population will be covered on mobiles and landlines.
