Riyadh’s Struggle With ‘Saudisation’

Saudi authorities are cracking down on undocumented immigrants, deporting hundreds of thousands of foreign workers from the country. The move is part of a broader ‘Saudisation’ scheme that seeks to address high unemployment and to reduce the Kingdom’s dependence on foreign labour. Government officials describe the programme as a necessary step to develop the economy, while some business leaders claim it will strangle the construction sector.
