Vegetable Wholesale And Retail Price Difference Crosses 49%

News: The difference between India's wholesale prices (WSP) and retail prices of vegetables has increased to more than 49% for 2013/14, according to a report by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). The report also indicated that most of the Indian retailers were selling vegetables at prices much higher than the wholesale price index (WPI). This is affecting consumers paying unreasonably high prices for vegetables, and the farmers whose margins have been squeezed. ASSOCHAM suggests the government should support farmers by providing them with facilities and encouraging the development of cold storage units through public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives.
