News: The governments of Australia and New Zealand have collaborated to stop telecoms operators in both countries from burdening travellers with excessive mobile roaming fees. New Zealand Communications Minister, Amy Adams, and her Australian counterpart, Stephen Conroy, revealed a draft report that aims to find ways to slash charges and improve transparency. The report states that telecoms operators are charging higher roaming tariffs, with excessive profit margins. The standard is expected to be in place within a year.

BMI View: The move is expected to benefit mobile subscribers in Australia. BMI estimates there will be 30.93mn mobile subscribers in 2012 and expects the total to rise 9.28% by 2016 to 33.8mn. During this period penetration will rise from 135% to 140.3%.
