Ministry Awards Port Construction Contract To Azerkerpu

News: Azerbaijan's construction company Azerkerpu and its Transport Ministry have signed a contract under which the firm will construct and equip a new port complex in Alat town, reports Republic. The construction of the port is scheduled to be completed in 2015 and will be carried out in three phases. The phase one of the project will comprise the construction of two ferry and three cargo berths for container, ro-ro and dry cargo operations. The second and the third phases include the construction of five additional berths, allowing the port to handle up to 11.6mn tonnes of goods annually.

BMI View: Azerbaijan currently boasts two main ports: Baku and Dubandi. The latter primarily transports fuel products across the Caspian Sea, with a transhipment capacity of 10mn tonnes a year. Baku is the country's largest port and, with a depth of 12 metres, is one of the deepest in the Caspian Sea.
