Government Plans US$400mn Road Restoration

News: The government of Mozambique has revealed plans to invest US$400mn in full restoration of the road from the port of Beira to Machipanda. The rehabilitation work of the 300km road, which borders Zimbabwe, is expected to start in February 2014, reports O Pais, citing Mozambican Minister of Public Works Cadmiel Muthemba. Under the plan, the road would be substantially widened to at least a four-lane highway with six lanes at some points. Meanwhile, the Export-Import Bank of China is expected to finance the road project. The road is considered to be of strategic importance for the country's trade as it also borders with landlocked southern African countries, including Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
