Colombo Port Expects Increase In Transhipment Business

News: Sri Lanka's Colombo Port is expecting an increase in transhipment business after Japan's K-Line car carrier, MV Delhi Highway, made its maiden call in Colombo on January 4. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) stated that the 299m-long vessel has a gross tonnage of 58,997 and a deadweight tonnage of 18.9 tonnes. Meanwhile, SLPA chairman Priyath Bandu Wickrama and the master of the vessel, Peter C. Dzhiliyalov, exchanged plaques to celebrate the maiden call of the car carrier. A sum of US$200mn has already been invested for the development of container-handling facilities in Colombo in a bid to enhance productivity level along with new equipment and yard space for containers with a carrying capacity of 600,000 twenty-foot equivalent units.
