Carmat To Begin Human Implantations Of Total Artificial Heart
Carmat has obtained the approval of four international cardiac surgery centres in Belgium, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Slovenia to proceed with the first clinical implantations of its bioprosthetic total artificial heart. The institutions are St Pierre University Hospital, Brussels, Belgium; Silesian Centre for Heart Disease, Zabrze, Poland; Prince Sultan Cardiac Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Marcello Conviti, CEO of the company, stated that patient selection process and training of the clinical teams are ongoing in these four countries, and implantations are expected to start post completion of the training programme. Carmat has also secured a total of EUR 33 million as grants from OSEO, the largest subsidy ever given to a small/medium enterprise. Carmat expects to receive additional approvals in a near future, potentially in France and in other countries.
