Antwerp Port Registers 1.4% Increase In Freight Volume

News: Belgium's Port of Antwerp registered a 1.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) rise in freight volume to 47mn metric tonnes in Q113. The volume of liquid bulk handled by the port reached 14.2mn metric tonnes for the reported period, up by 37.4% y-o-y, according to figures released by the port authority. The rise was attributed to the handling of crude oil and petroleum derivatives. However, dry bulk volume slipped by 33.2% y-o-y to 3.56mn metric tonnes in Q113. The volume of coal and ore also dropped 69.1% y-o-y and 12.4% y-o-y to 535,951 metric tonnes and 581,577 metric tonnes respectively in the reported period. Meanwhile, the number of containers handled by the port stood at 2.1 twenty-foot equivalent units in Q113, down 2.8% y-o-y. Additionally, the number of vessels arriving at the port slipped 1.2% y-o-y to 3,587 in the first three months of 2013.
